Two rivers meet at Sultan, WA, where the Sultan River runs into the Skykomish. The east Snohomish County city sits on US 2, the Stevens Pass Highway, about 25 miles from Everett by HistoryLink’s measure, and it has grown fast, from 5,146 people in the 2020 Census to 7,480 in OFM’s 2026 estimate.
Named for Tseul-ted
Coast Salish bands lived in the Skykomish Valley first, with villages at present-day Sultan, Startup, Gold Bar and Index. According to HistoryLink, settlers named the Sultan River for the Skykomish leader Tseul-ted, whom they called Sultan John; it describes him as a woodworker, fisherman and hunter whom others traveled long distances to see as a healer. HistoryLink’s 2026 essay notes that drivers leaving town westbound on US 2 pass a 13-foot statue of Tseul-ted that the Monroe artist Jerry Carter made by hand from sawdust and polyester resin.
The town grew as a gateway to gold claims in the Sultan Basin and then as a supply station for the Great Northern Railway, whose line reached Sultan in 1892. Residents voted to incorporate on June 10, 1905, with about 400 people, and the town became official on June 29 that year.
One later chapter still gets told. On August 30, 1968, the Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter Than Air Fair opened on a pasture in the Sultan area for three days, with Santana and the Grateful Dead on the bill. HistoryLink counts it among the country’s first multi-day outdoor rock concerts.
Where do people go outside in Sultan?
Osprey Park, at 814 First Street, is the city’s largest and most heavily used park: 76.2 acres with a winding riverside trail system along the Sultan River, foot bridges, handmade interpretive signs, covered basketball courts, ball and soccer fields and a playground. The “Dogs on First” off-leash area sits on a separate parcel at the southeast end. City parks are open dawn to dusk.
Across the system, the city counts more than 159 acres of parks and open space and 10 miles of trails, most of it near the historic town center and the river.
Just outside city limits on US 2, the tiny Wayside Chapel has stood since 1962, built as outreach to travelers during Seattle’s world’s fair, with a sign that reads “Pause Rest Worship.” Eagle Scouts refurbished it in 2007 and again in 2023.
The Sultan Shindig
In 2026 the Sultan Shindig ran July 10–12, with free entry, centered on River Park at First and Main. The Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce produces it, and volunteers run it. The draw is the logging show, where competitors climb poles, run a chainsaw obstacle course and throw axes; around it come a street fair, a Saturday-morning grand parade, a Sunday Show and Shine car show and Saturday-night fireworks. Many roads close that weekend, and organizers route traffic in and out on Third Street.
How do you get around from Sultan?
US 2 carries Sultan’s traffic west toward Monroe and east toward Gold Bar and the pass, and HistoryLink notes that skiers, truckers and tourists pass through daily. As of October 2026, Community Transit Routes 270 and 271 stop in Sultan on their way between Everett Station and Gold Bar; 271 makes more regular stops, and 270 runs during peak commute times. Drive times are traffic-dependent.
